Silly Pup!

Every pup has something quirky in their personality and its a beautiful thing! Its those small things that we really need to cherish about them and not hold other dogs accountable to do or be like. Too often I hear "I wish this dog would be like, or would do what our last dog did..." This is not quite fair, because they are all so different. Instead lets enjoy those silly or unique things that each of our dogs do!! However, if there is something that really excites them to the point you have lost control of them completely, consider some training! For example, this is if your dog is trying to run across the street for a squirrel or a cat. This says that their instinct, or you may also refer to it as "drive" is so strong that they lose their ability to make good decisions. Let me tell you a little bit about Gia.

When my dog, Gia was young she really got excited about anything that would spray water! She would love to jump at and bite anything like a sprinkler, hose, water gun, etc. That means I had to quickly learn to be ready for her slightly crazy behavior if sprinklers would start to go off just about anywhere we might be at the moment. Luckily through training, and patience, she has developed great control so her crazy behavior isn't driving me crazy! So now, I can wash the car outside and she can calmly wait outside next to me. That makes me so proud of her!!

In the dog training world, we like to call this impulse control. This is one reason why it is great to really get to know your dog and their quirks. Then, if needed to help them work on any behavior that you don't agree with so they can understand what is the proper behavior that is expected of them.

Every dog has something that can get them going, so what is that for your dog? Lastly, if Fido is giving you trouble and you would like some help with their impulse control at home, training is key. It does not necessarily shut off the quirk or drive, but instead can help your silly pup make better decisions.
